The Rural Maryland Council is now accepting applications for the 2026 Rural Readiness Program, an initiative designed to support community-based leaders and organizations working to strengthen rural communities across Maryland.
The program focuses on place-based economic development, community capacity building, leadership development, organizational strengthening, and sustainable rural growth. Through training, technical assistance, and project development support, Rural Readiness helps participants move community-driven ideas closer to implementation.
Individuals who live or work in one of Maryland’s designated rural areas are encouraged to apply, including representatives from community-based nonprofit organizations, local government entities, tribal organizations, and other organizations serving rural Maryland.
Selected participants will take part in six to eight cohort training sessions between September and December 2026. Sessions will cover topics such as program orientation, grant writing, project development, business planning, partnerships, funding resources, and final project readiness. Most sessions will be held virtually, with at least one required in-person session.
Applications will be evaluated based on project clarity, long-term community impact, feasibility, sustainability, strength of partnerships, innovation, and alignment with rural development priorities. Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate collaboration with local businesses, educational institutions, and community partners.
The application deadline is August 1, 2026. Applicants must submit a Letter of Interest and resume electronically to the Rural Maryland Council.
